Early Life & Background

  • Barry Quinton was born in 1946, in Islington, London. historyproject.org.uk

  • His parents were not in the film/cinema industry. However, a maternal uncle met his future wife working at the Leicester Square Theatre (that later became the Odeon West End) after WWII. historyproject.org.uk


Career & Work

  • He started very young in the film/cinema business: in August 1961 he began work as a trainee projectionist at the Odeon, North Finchley. historyproject.org.uk

  • Over time, he moved to other cinemas, still as a projectionist (second projectionist etc.), including work at the Odeon, Gaumont, and others. historyproject.org.uk

  • He also worked on live shows (when cinemas/theatres hosted live performances) in various venues. historyproject.org.uk

  • Later he worked with NATKE (a trade union in the cinema/television sector in the UK) – becoming Training Officer, then going on to be in charge of the Cinema Division covering cinema staff (non-management) in London/South-East etc. historyproject.org.uk
